Maidstone 0 - 75 HHRFC

Heath were deservedly crowned London 2 South champions on Saturday with a ruthless performance that left their hosts reeling. Heath had to win this game to secure the championship and with it automatic promotion to London 1 and if they had any nerves they barely showed them as Maidstone were completely overwhelmed.

The tries, 11 in all, came thick and fast after an opening 10 minutes of dominance which yielded just one penalty. Combining speed of foot, speed of thought and forward superiority Heath were in complete control. When Maidstone did threaten, the best defence in the league was up to the test and clearly in no mood to concede points.

The tries themselves came from all parts of the pitch and were shared between backs and forwards. Nine players got in on the try scoring reflecting the great teamwork that has earmarked Heath this season.. The power of Wayne Maki and Will Stutchbury opened the scoring in the 10th and 15th minutes with Adam Healey stretching his legs for a third on 24. A Jo Govett 70 plus metres breakaway and then a charge by Greg Parkes took the try count to five at half time which together with 2 penalties and 2 conversions by Simon Fifield made it 35-0 to Heath.

Into the second period and still the tries kept coming in. Just 2 minutes had been played when Simon Fifield forced his way over followed by Parkes for his second on 46.

If Maidstone were not suffering enough then the unfortunate hamstring injury to their captain Martin Arnold surely deflated them further. The game was held up while he was treated and helped off the pitch and it took a few minutes for things to warm up again.

When Heath did get rolling, the forwards took charge again. Not content with shunting the home pack around at will, the pack with Dave Wattam and Oliver Tomaszczyk to the fore took the game to Maidstone ball in hand. First Huw Jenkins and then two minutes later Tom Gribble added to the score.

Into the last few minutes and two more tries. First, quick thinking by Govett who took a quick line out in the Maidstone 22 for Nick Miller to score under the posts. Finally, Miller scored the eleventh try following a break from half way. With five of these six tries converted by Fifield the final score was 75-0 to Heath.

With this result, Heath took their playing record for the season to Played 22, Won 20, Points For 756, Points Against 190. These statistics bear witness to the dominance Heath have shown this season in combining style and skill with a ruthless edge and solid defence.

A great day for Heath enjoyed by both the players and the large travelling support, possibly as many as 100, who made the trip from Whitemans Green. The whole party, including a collection of WAGS (see attached), travelled home celebrating their rapid return to London 1.
