John Drake – a long standing member of the Club – died on Christmas Day, aged 79.

John started playing for HHRFC over 60 years ago prior to its formal establishment in 1958, so he was one of the original local rugby pioneers who helped form the Club from outset.
During his career on the pitch he was captain of the 1st XV (seated centre front above) and also coached a number of Colts teams when his playing days ended. Off the pitch he was an active member of the Club holding many and various positions on the Board, providing invaluable legal advice when required and contributing significantly to the establishment and development of the Club in the early years, remaining a lifelong Heath supporter.

He played on many occasions for Sussex and also the Martlets and he played one of his last games for Heath against Burgess Hill in a team that included his sons Adam, Simon and Ben. An avid tourist to Thouars in France, John became a regular member of the Bonkers XIV on tours to Dublin and Paris.

John’s other voluntary work included acting as the Hon. Secretary of Mencap in the Mid Sussex area - a position he held for over 45 years - increasing income considerably for this important charity during this time. A graduate of Cambridge University, senior founding partner in the leading Mid Sussex law firm Stevens Drake and Pope (now known as stevensdrake), John achieved many notable feats during his life, including completing the London Marathon with his brother Tim.

John's memorial service is being held today (Thursday 16 January) at St Mark’s Church, Staplefield to be followed by a gathering of friends and family at the HHRFC Clubhouse.

All at the Club are very grateful for his significant contribution to Heath over the years and send their condolences and best wishes to John’s wife Janet, his family and friends.
