Remembering Marc Bennett

Remembering Marc Bennett

Tracey Spuyman13 Feb 2020 - 12:31

A celebration of Marc's life is being held on Monday 17th February...

Marc is sorely missed by all his friends at Haywards Heath Rugby Club and the rugby family beyond who will always think of him as a rugby man, moreover a Heath rugby man, through and through.

Marc’s reputation on the pitch built from an early age when, under the watchful coaching eye of his father Tony, he started playing through the mini and junior age groups at the Club during the 1970s before going on to be a key part of the all-conquering Heath Colts team of the late 1980s. The majority of this group of players retained a strong bond through to this day, demonstrating the enormous value rugby brings beyond the game, by developing strong and enduring friendships.

Marc made a number of appearances for Harlequins Under 21s, Heath 1st and 2nd XVs and the Sussex senior side during 1988-92 as his rugby career continued to flourish. He also took his rugby skills abroad playing for Tuggeranony Vikings Rugby based in Australian Capital Territory during 1989-90, then in both New Zealand and France, showing early signs of his passion for travel as a pastime and a future professional career.
Marc was an outstanding rugby player with speed, agility and vision and was known for his infectious personality, sense of humour and kindness to all he met, both on and off the pitch.

His commitment to the Club was shown by the way he was one of the first ten Pathfinders donating generously to the HHRFC Clubhouse Project at the City Lunch in 2018.
He was ingrained in HHRFC and his son Charlie, who is a regular in the current undefeated Heath Under 15s team, will continue this legacy with the help of his team mates and coaches.

All of Marc’s friends and former team mates are devastated to lose Marc too soon and the Club sends Nancy, Harry, Charlie, Zoe and Marc’s parents, Tony and Micki, much strength and deep felt condolences at this incredibly difficult time. We want them to know the enormous love and respect Marc receives from everyone who knew him personally as well as those who knew of him.

Marc and his family will be in everyone’s thoughts at this desperately sad and challenging time. The Heath rugby family will be there to support the family in any way possible when the time is right and they are ready.

A short funeral service will be held at the Surrey & Sussex Crematorium Worth at 2.15pm next Monday 17th February followed by a Celebration of Marc’s Life at the HHRFC Clubhouse from 3.30pm to 6pm. The family kindly asks no flowers.
